There is a movement toward accommodation for all persons, of all abilities, in all walks of life that is spreading throughout the world. This effort towards accessibility is continuously evolving and spreading into all areas of human needs. There are national and international, public and private organizations, and governments that support these undertakings.

A large impact came in the United States with the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990.
|
| |
The ADA decrees that any entity, be it a building, a restaurant, an office, a sidewalk, a restroom, a bus, that is open to the public must be accessible to people with disabilities. The ADA also says that people with disabilities are entitled to equal employment opportunities.

| |
The International community is also making great strides in improving the rights of persons with disabilities.
|
Several countries have implemented laws to protect the individual rights of the disabled. There are national and International organizations working toward improving the designs of dwellings, computers, transportation, electronics, and many other products and services. Organizations such as Disabled Persons International is dedicated to improving the rights of persons through-out the world. The World Wide Web Consortium works towards improving access to the Internet. Other organizations such as The Arc which is a national organization of and for people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities and their families. It is devoted to promoting and improving supports and services for people with mental retardation and their families. The Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work whose mission is to promote and support meaningful and equitable employment of people with disabilities.

|
| |
The concern of the United Nations for the well-being and rights of disabled persons is rooted in its founding principles, which are based on human rights, fundamental freedoms and equality of all human beings. The contributions of United Nations specialized agencies to advance the situation of disabled persons is noteworthy: the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) by providing special education; the World Health Organization (WHO) by providing technical assistance in health and prevention; the United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF) by supporting childhood disability programs and providing technical assistance in collaboration with Rehabilitation International (a non-governmental organization).

BENEFITS OF THE ADA ( Americans with Disabilities Act )
|
| |
The programs that are being undertaken benefits everyone, not just people with disabilities. Ensuring a wheelchair user's access with ramps and curb cuts also helps an able-bodied mother pushing a stroller or a senior citizen wheeling a cart of groceries. Supplementing signage with auditory cues (for example, at crosswalks) helps those who are temporarily distracted or forgetful. Disease, accident, injury and old age can effect all persons at some point in life. Policy, design, construction, and technology that ensures access some today improve access for many tomorrow.
