Selecting a computer monitor
Types of monitors There are several different types computer monitors available today. They come in a variety of shapes, designs and colors. We hear terms such as resolutions, pixels, CRT, LCD, LED. But what does it all mean?
CRT monitors (cathode ray tube) A Cathode Ray Tube is basically a vacuum tube containing an electron gun at one end and a fluorescent screen at the other end. This type of monitor technology was most commonly used in the manufacture of television screens. Although this type of monitor is highly reliable and capable of generating high resolutions thereby providing a clear picture, they tend to be very bulky and take up a lot of space. CRT monitors come in a variety of display sizes and screen resolutions. For years this was the most common monitor available.
LCD monitors (liquid crystal display) liquid Crystal display monitors use to sheets of polarizing material with liquid crystal between them. When an electronic current passes through the liquid, the crystals will align so that polarizing light in varying amounts will pass through them, thus creating an image. Currently there are two different types of LCD technology available. These include the active matrix (TFT), and a passive matrix technology. LCD monitors are becoming increasingly popular.
|
Some major advantages are:
- · More compact and lightweight than a CRT monitor
- · Consumes much less desk space
- · Do not consume much electricity and can even be operated using batteries
- · images transmitted do not get geometrically distorted and have little flicker
|
The term LED (light emitting diode) is an electronic light source used in most LCD monitors
|
Some of the pros and cons of each monitor. · Resolution or how sharp your picture will look is very flexible on a CRT monitor where as an LCD monitor is less flexible. The resolution on a CRT monitor can be changed without affecting performance. The LCDs resolution is fixed, but can be changed using a graphics interface card. If you do you will notice a drop in performance. · LCD monitors have a higher costs than a typical CRT monitor of the same screen size. · When viewing a CRT monitor you can look at it from any angle with no problem, however your LCD monitors you will notice a picture will distort or disappear when viewing from different angles.

Flat Panel versus Flat Screen Monitors
When buying a computer monitor many people confuse the term flat panel with flat screen. A flat screen monitor is typically a CRT (cathode ray tube) that has a flat screen instead of a curved screen. Conventional CRT monitors have a curved screen whereas modern technology advances have resulted in the development of a flat screen.
A flat panel monitor refers to the more modern LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors that are much thinner, and take up much less space, than the old style CRT monitors.
Computer screen resolution display
Display screen resolution is often specified as the width and height in pixels. In other words a screen resolution of 640 x 480 would display 307200 pixels. A pixel on the screen is equal to one square of information, so a picture or image on a computer screen is made up of thousands of tiny squares of information. To produce the sharpest images possible on an LCD monitor, the user must ensure the display resolution of the computer matches the native resolution of the monitor. On a CRT with a fixed beam sweep rate, you are required to use the native resolution. On a CRT without this restriction, you may use any resolution supported by the monitor that matches the monitor's physical aspect ratio and it will look fine.
If the aspect ratio of the physical display and the selected resolution are different, many different things can happen. On some LCDs, the monitor will stretch or squash the image to fill the entire display. This can result in the image appearing blurry or jagged. On others, the aspect ratio will be maintained while expanding the image to fit the display, resulting in black bars on the top or sides of the image. This can also result in the image appearing blurry or jagged, depending on the native resolution of the display and the selected resolution on the computer
Computer Screen Size
The size of the display is usually given as the distance between two opposite screen corners. The problem with measuring on the diagonal is that it does not distinguish between the aspect ratio of monitors with identical sizes. In other words if a monitor is 12 in. Wide by 12 in. High the diagonal measurement is a 17 in. Monitor, where as a monitor that is 12 in. Wide by 9 in. High is only a 15 in. Monitor. This can be very confusing when selecting a monitor size.
Video Graphics
VGA (video graphics array), SVGA (super VGA), XGA (extended graphics array), all refer to the compatibility of the monitor to display different sets of resolutions, color displays and graphics. When purchasing a monitor you should know what your computer will primarily used for. If playing video games you should have a display that can support higher color and refresh rates. Whereas if a computer is primarily used for data entry lesser displays and adapters are more than adequate.
